The good news is that the undemocratic, socialist EU project is in the biggest trouble it has ever been in and they have no answers to the three huge problems that are tearing it asunder.
Firstly there is the Euro, a one size fits all currency. However, structurally, it is impossible for it to fit. The Euro is massively advantageous to a financially disciplined country like Germany and a disaster for financially indisciplined nations like the Club Med states. It very effectively removes the wealth from the south and sends it north. So Germany has boomed, nearly quadrupling its trade surplus since the introduction of the Euro, whilst Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece have all suffered terribly and are still suffering now. The Italian economy, for instance, has only grown by 4.6% in the 16 years since they joined the Euro, this is an unmitigated disaster for them. There is no way forward whilst these countries remain in the Euro because the problem is structural. But the EU treaties prohibit currency exit. So all these Club Med countries would now be far, far better off out of the EU.
The second problem is David Cameron’s “renegotiation” to make the EU change itself to be closer to what the British want. This has set a precedent, now any state can have a hissy fit, call a referendum and demand changes. So they will. The biggest danger (opportunity!) here is Marine Le Pen, who could very well be France’s next President and who wants massive reforms. 260,000 Austrians signed an EU exit petition, forcing a referendum debate in parliament. Hungary is to hold referendum on the EU migrant quota plan. Also Beata SzydÅ‚o, who became Prime Minister of Poland in November, is a tough cookie and leads a Eurosceptic Law and Justice party who demand EU reforms. Beppe Grillo, the head of Italy’s second most popular party, the Five Star Movement, has gone from being a vague eurosceptic to an outspoken one and demands reforms.  Appeasing these often opposing demands will be impossible. Cameron has opened Pandora’s Box.
The third problem is economic migrants flooding in illegally into the EU from the Middle East, Asia and Africa, mostly via Turkey. In 2015, there were 1.83 million illegal border crossings detected at EU’s external borders. This year the numbers are running at ten times last year’s numbers. These migrants are mostly Muslim with primitive social beliefs, they have brought with them a very nasty crime epidemic across Europe and they are costing taxpayers tens of billions, they bring nothing that our society needs and much that it doesn’t need. Western liberalism just doesn’t understand it when people, like these migrants, have a completely different value set and morality.
A fundamental pillar of the EU is the Shengen Agreement that removed borders between most countries. The UK opted out of this. An economic migrant arriving in Greece is free to walk to most other countries and then to demand food, housing, money etc there. Mostly they went to Germany, because it is the most generous, but a disproportionate number went to Sweden where they are now causing social mayhem. The result is that many countries have broken the EU treaties and re-erected borders. Shengen is now a joke. Macedonia recently erected a formidable barrier, which is trapping the migrants in Greece. This is utterly unsustainable, how can a bankrupt country with poor infrastructure and pathetic governance handle millions of vagrants? The EU has failed abysmally, it has done far too little, far too late and has done much to make the problem worse.
So there you have it, the EU is in catastrophic trouble across three completely separate issues. Margaret Thatcher was right. Â All these problems are hubris, the EU tried to be a socialist superstate when what was needed was a free trade area. No other trade area in the world has a Parliament and all the other utter unnecessary paraphernalia that the EU does. And the EU is massively corrupt, cronyist and corporatist. It serves its citizens very badly, stunting economic growth with its meddling. Cameron’s reforms didn’t even scratch the surface, the whole edifice needs major surgery.
