Currently it is very on trend for entertainers such as soccer players, F1 drivers, singers and actors to virtue gesture by preaching to us about woke politics. They are the last people we should listen to. What they are all proposing is some facet of Marxism; nationalising childhood, Black Lives Matter, abrogating parental responsibility, restricting our diet, giving up carbon. All part of a creed that has failed every single time it has been tried. If they got what they wanted then they would be living in communal dormitories and going to work in a bus.

Vladimir Lenin allegedly called these people “useful idiots”.  People who promote a cause without fully comprehending the cause’s goals, and who are cynically used by the cause’s leaders. As true today as it was in 1917.

There are a number of very good reasons why you should not take advice from these people.

• Soccer players, especially, are notoriously thick. You just have to listen to one being interviewed or to ex players commentating on the TV. Some of them have trouble putting a grammatically correct English sentence together. And they rarely state anything about the game other than the glaringly obvious.
• Virtually all entertainers are very poorly educated. There are occasional exceptions, but most of them devoted so much of their childhood time to learning their skills and developing their careers that they missed out on schooling. The average Premiership soccer side is not bristling with A levels, to put it mildly.
• These entertainers are, themselves, ridiculously rich. Soccer players on 100 to 400 thousand pounds a week. F1 drivers on a million pounds a week. But they very rarely use a significant amount of their own money to practice what they preach. Hypocrisy is prevalent.
• Following on from that, they live lives of celebrity, entitlement and privilege. They know nothing of the real world that we live in, so are utterly unqualified to tell us how to order our own daily lives in it.
• These people thrive on adoration and publicity. They see woke politics, wrongly, as another way to achieve this.

There is one very simple thing these entertainers can do to give themselves credibility; put themselves up for democratic election. Seek a popular mandate for their ideas. Test their woke stupidity in the forum of public opinion. This has been done, but incredibly rarely. There are 650 MPs in Parliament and none of them are ex professional entertainers. Ronald Reagan, an American actor, made it all the way to President. It looks like Meghan Markle wants to do the same. It will be fun watching her try.

So, next time you hear a celebrity spouting politics, telling you how to run your life, there is only one possible response. Laugh at them.
